What is a metric?

When looking at metrics and measurement it is important to determine what is a metric and what is not. Companies can spend an enormous amount of time and resources measuring the wrong things. Not all numbers are metrics. Below is a guideline for determining what is a metric and what is not. If you need assistance in determining if a measurement is a metric or not, please Contact Us.

  • Measure results associated with objectives
  • Drive continuous performance improvement
  • Can be easily calculated
  • Can be compared easily
  • Should be limited to only 3-5 for any specific outcome or objective
  • Are continuously reviewed and refined

The most valuable metrics are in the public domain with open access and participation.
